Frequently asked questions

What kind of a foundation does the terrace need?

Above all, a glazed terrace needs a frost resistant foundation.

Is planning permission required for a terrace?

A planning permission for minor construction is usually required for a glass terrace. However, there are varying regulations in different countries and areas, so you should contact your local planning authorities.

How long does it take to install a glazed terrace?

The installation, when performed by a professional, takes one day on an average.

Can you get a tan through the glazing?

Toughened glass lets UV radiation through, so it is quite possible to get a tan with the glass panes closed.

Can the glass terrace be locked from the outside?

Glass terraces always come with a Giesse lock which can be fitted with a key. The terrace can then be locked and opened from the outside, as well. Only one side of the terrace should have a lock with a key. The system can also be fitted with an ABLOY lock.

Is a glass terrace door secure?

The glass pane is made of 4 mm or 6 mm toughened glass or alternatively of laminated glass. We recommend toughened glass for glass terraces, as it requires a sharp blow before it breaks. The shock resistance, bending resistance and resistance to thermal variation of toughened safety glass is many times that of ordinary glass. If toughened glass breaks, it crumbles into small, harmless fragments that do not pose a serious risk of injury.

Is a glazed terrace a warm space?

Lumon glass terrace elements are of durable aluminium construction with single glass panes, so in winter the temperature falls close to the outdoor temperature. After glazing, the terrace is an uninsulated cold and humid space. The furnishings should therefore be suitable for outdoor use. However, in addition to providing protection from the wind, Lumon glazing also protects the terrace from snow and debris.

Is a glazed terrace hot in the summer, especially if the roof is made of glass, too?

A prefabricated terrace will naturally be warm in the summer when the sun shines, but if all the doors are opened the draught will cool the hot air. The roofing can also be made of toned glass which takes the edge off the sun's intensity. The colour alternatives include bright, smoke, grey, bronze, opal, stippolyte and satinato.

Are the terrace glass panes available in different shades?

You can choose from the following shades:

- 4 mm toughened bright
- 6 mm toughened bright
- 6 mm tinted: green, grey, brown
- 3+3 laminated (IG65 opal)
- 6 mm stippolyte
- 6 mm satinato

The panes are divided by a glazing bar, so the top and bottom part of the pane can be made of different types of glass.

Are the aluminium parts of the terrace available in different colours?

The terrace profiles are polyester powder coated. The standard colours are 9010, 7024, 9006 and 8019 from the RAL colour chart. However, by special order you can select from all of the 210 colour alternatives on the RAL colour chart.
