Research

The Lumon balcony glazing system has been thoroughly tested in locations including Finland and Germany.

The following, among other things, have been tested: aging, wind resistance, durability, and all technical and safety properties.

Lumon balcony glass panes are made of extremely durable toughened safety glass. The breaking stress of 6 mm toughened glass is 426 MPa, while for ordinary glass it is as low as 150 MPa.

Toughened glass has a high-strength surface and good tensile and bending properties.

Research data on balcony glazing systems

Dr. Jussi Mattila from the Tampere University of Technology has studied the effects of balcony glazing systems on the decay of concrete constructions. The two-year study showed that balcony glazing systems protect both the structures and the coating materials.

The subject of the study was three blocks of flats completed in 1978 in Tampere and in Suvela, Espoo. Both glazed and unglazed balconies were monitored, and the balconies that were studied faced south or west.

Corrosion is slowed and frost weathering stopped completely.

According to the study, balcony glazing reduces moisture damage, and the rusting of reinforcing elements is slowed by about a third on balcony side walls and by about 50% on balcony ceilings.

Frost decay of concrete stopped completely. Glazing protects balcony structures from rain and snow.

In addition, glazing increases the temperature in the balcony by 1.5 - 2.5
