Frequently asked questions

Operating instructions

You may find answers to your questions in the instructions for use. Please read them carefully.

What to do if the glass pane does not open?

If the first glass pane does not open, make the gap between the first and second pane wider by pushing the second pane away. This gap has to be large enough, preferably at least 3 mm, so that the pane has room to open. Open the glass panes according to the instructions.

If some other glass pane does not open, make sure that the pane has been pushed all the way before opening.

How watertight is the balcony and how can it be ventilated?

a) Water tightness: Lumon balcony glazing protects your balcony against wind and the elements. To ensure sufficient ventilation, the glass panes are not completely watertight. Small amounts of snow or water may accumulate on the balcony in certain weather conditions.

b) Ventilation: The balcony is ventilated through the 1-3 mm gaps between the glass panes. The first glass pane can be locked in the ventilation position. CAUTION! THE BALCONY MUST NOT BE TOO AIRTIGHT. Sufficient ventilation must be ensured so that the structures dry off and stay in good condition.

c) There is usually a gap between the ceiling and the upper profile, the size of which depends on how uneven or even the ceiling is. This is a normal installation method.

Why does the glazing make snapping sounds?

The balcony glazing reacts to temperature changes. The snapping sounds are due to thermal exposure of the aluminium profiles. However, the glass panes and the fittings have been designed to withstand temperature changes and they are quite safe.

What are the patterns, stripes or marks that can sometimes be seen on the glazing?

a) Glass processing at different stages of production, i.e. toughening, may produce patterns on the surface of the glass. These may become visible when the glass gets fogged. Fogging is a natural phenomenon.

b) The patterns on the glass should be studied from a distance of 2 metres in normal lighting conditions. Detailed acceptance criteria for defects can be found in the quality requirements of the Sheet Glass Association of Finland (Tasolasiyhdistys).

Why do the glass panes bend?

The panes bend slightly in the toughening process. The degree of curvature can be 3 mm over a distance of 1 metre.

Can just any silicone spray be used for lubricating the plastic parts, rollers or sliding beads?

Any commonly used silicone oil or silicone spray can be used for the purpose. For easy operation, lubrication once or twice a year is recommended.

If the glazing is made with Pilkington Activ self-cleaning glass, do not use silicone oil or silicone spray! In such cases you can use Teflon spray.
