Mr. Pete Lattunen, architect form Lumon gave a speach about "Glazed balcony - input of Scandinavian innovation to European living " on Monday 20 June, 2011.

Frameless balcony glazing is constantly gaining popularity in various parts of Europe, and for a good reason - for several good reasons to be precise! I some parts of Europe it has been common to try to close up a balcony, in one way or another. The reason may have been simply to use up all available space in a small apartment as effectively as possible. It may have served as some sort of living space, storage space, as a tiny garden, you name it. This has been the case in many areas from Northern Russia to Southern Spain, while in some other areas like in UK no such tradition has existed.

Since early 90’ we have witnessed a sharp development of balcony glazing concept in Scandinavia, notably in Finland. The totally opening frameless glazing system, based on single toughened glass panes and slim aluminium profiles, is a technically and aesthetically superior way to provide shelter on a balcony. In an elegant way it offers great protection against weather, wind, rain, snow - or a sand storm, if you like. All this takes place without obstructing the view from the balcony. And also quite importantly, the recent development of balcony facade elements has often meant a lighter a brighter image for modern residential developments.

During 2009-2010 Lumon Oy had a study made on how balcony glazing effects on energy consumption of apartments. Profound testing and monitoring showed that 5-10% savings in energy consumption can be achieved! The point is that glazing acts as a buffer between exterior and interior. Noise is reduced typically 10-13dB, which is an important factor in urban areas.

Urbanisation will continue, due to many reasons. There is no doubt that glazed balcony will have an important role in modern urban living, whatever the environment or climate. It offers an excellent way for us to enjoy the natural light and view outside while being sheltered from many distractions. It is an equivalent of a glass veranda of a house, a fine modern version of it.
